"Most importantly, this issue is one of basic ethics," Wildlife Officer Marshall said, "It's the law: You must have written permission to hunt someone's property. Any ethical hunter is going to seek that permission."

Historically, farmers have relied on hunters to control deer populations and other game-related threats to their crops. Hunters will often give the farmer a portion of their bounty or offer their labor in trade.

Even though the times have changed, veteran hunters may need to remind younger generations on the importance of fostering the hunter-landowner relationship.

"Hunters should take care of their hunted property as if it were their own," Marshall stressed." They must leave the property in as good, or better shape than when they arrived by picking up litter and closing gates."

If they see suspected violators or trespassers, hunters should advise the landowner."The idea of "give and take" is particularly important when it comes to the stereotypes that many landowners hold about hunting in general.

As more of Ohio's land gets developed, the chances of encountering an "anti-hunting" property owner increase. Farmers aren't the only ones who own acreage anymore.In order to offset the preconceptions some people still hold, hunters must work hard to foster good relations with every landowner.

Hunting without permission makes for angry landowners and each year, the mistakes of a few are putting more acreage out of reach of law-abiding hunters.

Use Common Sense

Convincing a landowner you're one of the good guys comes down to common sense, especially when approaching property owners you've never met. Here are a few tips:

Don't knock on the landowner's door at 5 a.m. the first day of deer season. Call ahead and set up a convenient time to meet.
If you're not certain of a property owner's name or phone number, pick an appropriate time to stop by the landowner's home. Saturday afternoons or weekdays before dinner are good bets. Leave a note, if no one's home, with your name and phone number.If a mutual friend or relative is involved, mention their name in the initial introduction.
Look the part of the responsible hunter. No torn t-shirts or mud-covered jeans. Remember, allowing a stranger to bring weapons onto your property is a serious decision.
Use the "Permission for Hunting and Trapping on Private Land Form" in the back of the current Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations booklet. The form may be photocopied and used by all Ohio hunters. Any written permission is acceptable, but the more professional-looking the agreement, the better the chance of gaining permission.
Many landowners are concerned about liability issues related to allowing hunting. According to Officer Rick Louttit, the Ohio Department of Wildlife's Medina County wildlife officer, the "Permission for Hunting and Trapping on Private Land Form" has a release-from-liability statement.

In the Center, you will see Trouble refusing to come inside the house this morning. He decided to take his morning nap in his kennel no matter how I coaxed, begged, or pleaded. Above and Below, you will see Josey Wales spending his morning leisurely in Trouble's Dog Bed since his brother was too much of a doofus to come in the house. I'm not seeing much by way of guilt in Josey's expression.

Ode to Winston

When I was a child, we had Newfoundland Dogs.

Newfies are big, slobbery, gentle beasts. We raised Winston from a pup and I'm certain I will never feel that same affection as I did for our Winnie. Don't get me wrong, I love my dogs. Winston, however, will always hold a special place in my soul.

Newfs are creatures close to God's heart. Their webbed feet, thick, waterproof coats, and rudder-like tails make them natural lifeguards.

There was a Newf in the icy water saving lives on the night the Titanic sank. There was a Newfie at the Battle of Trafallgar in 1805, a Newf rescued an entire ship of people in 1919, and a Newf rescued Napoleon, in the dark, when he fell off a dock and into the water.

Newfies aren't for everybody. These animals are great slobbery animals and anyone with a fetish for a clean house probably isn't suited for this breed. Once a Newfie touches your heart, however, you are forever changed.

Vintage Crochet Sovereign Purse

I happened upon this lovely little crocheted purse at

along with a link to the Hampshire Museum of England which, apparently, collects and displays vintage purses. I love the sites so much I had to share. The instructions claim the purse is easy to crochet, although it looks tricky. Below is a brief history of sovereign purses as shown at http://www.allfreecrafts.com/.

Vintage Crochet Sovereign Purse
This sovereign purse is one of several purse patterns, including a Bridal Beaded Purse which were first published in Beeton's Book of Needlework, 1870. According to A Brief History of Bags and Purses from the Hampshire Museum in England, sovereign purses were coin purses with metal fastenings: Small knitted, netted or crocheted silk or cotton coin purses are also characteristic of [the Victorian] period and were known as stocking purses, or 'miser' purses. By mid century these had metal fastenings and the whole was often made of a delicate metal chain, which supported sovereigns and half sovereigns, hence the term 'sovereign purse'. Chamois leather was also used, together with metal rings to secure the coins. Sovereign cases were of circular metal design, with an internal spring to release a coin at a time. It is worth noting that in North America handbags are still called purses, which may refer back to their introduction there from Europe after 1800, when they were still primarily coin purses.

Our Blizzard has turned wet. The snow is melting and everything is soggy. Pools of water are everywhere.

Let's see, what exciting items can I add to the blog? I went grocery shopping today. Does anyone else find it absurd that bread is $3.50? Went to Wal-Mart or should I call it Hannah Montana-Mart. Everywhere I turn in Walmart, something is branded "Hannah Montana."

Hannah Montana stickers, barbie dolls, shirts, pajamas, posters, yogurt, wrapping paper, cds, car batteries, tires, lightbulbs... Ok, the last three I made up, although I wouldn't be surprised.

I've been trying to think of some fantastic theme for my blog. Something fascinating and tempting to everyone who stops by. Maybe I could get George Clooney to buy a dog bed and then write about it on my blog. I'll work on that, getting George Clooney to buy a dog bed. I'm not sure if he has a dog?

Speaking of Blizzards, I have snow reaching up to my Kitchen Window, nearly covering my Rose of Sharon Bush entirely. The poor little birds are shivering and poofy out by the feeder. I think even the Cardinals are considering a trip South next winter.

The girls are venturing out this morning. The dogs can barely walk through the snow. Josey is agile enough to bounce through the thickness. Trubby, however, plows through like a tank.

Well, I'm off to make French Toast for three little girls who want to play in the snow.

Labs4Rescue

I just checked my Esty shop to see how much I had so far to donate to Labs4Rescue. I'm taking 10 percent of my sales and donating it to help Laborador Retrievers in Need.

So far, my total is $1.35. A stinking $1.35. What a bummer. I really want to give them a decent donation at the end of the month. Hopefully, this amount will rise while everyone is cooped up with the Blizzard this weekend.

It started snowing and snowing and snowing this morning. Kids coming home from school early, my craft show cancelled. Supposed to snow until Sunday evening.

Bummer about the craft show. I was looking forward to sitting among artists/crafters and talking to people pass by as I drink coffee. Oh well, it's supposed to be rescheduled.

My poor little 5-year-old, Louisa. She has been so patient this past week as I sewed and sewed. Yesterday and today, I began to see her frustration with Mommy being so distracted. And, now, she's going to miss Saturday ballet and a chance to go to a friend's house.

The good news is...we can play Wii, have cocoa, read and play cards without feeling guilty because my inventory is stacked!

I've discovered a new form of torture. Today, as I was trying desperately to get a good picture of a new cat bed to list on my shop, my 5-year-old wouldn't stop talking and "helping."

The scene was actually hilarious. Here I am with our cat "Dinky" who is less-than-thrilled to be posed in another cat bed pic. My daughter is running around me in circles, talking endlessly, and moving my background fabric. She's moving under the background fabric and pulling the fabric off of the table and teasing the cat.

With all this going on, I'm trying to get my picture. Pictures are hard for me. I take forever. Then, my batteries run out on the camera! So I'm scraping the last bit of juice from these failing batteries. I somehow managed to get some pictures, if the pictures are good, that's another issue.

I was a very busy bee today. We have a Craft Show on Saturday and I've been sewing, sewing, sewing, oh, and sewing.

I've made some pieces I'm really proud of, like the Groovy Cat Bed with a beaded front door! Very cool.

I'm really getting into this tye-dying thing. I took 5 yards of canvas and tye-dyed today, making some beautiful patterns and colors. I created a couple big comfy pillows and I'm hoping to make another round bolster dog bed. The canvas becomes really soft after a few washes so I've been washing each piece three times. I kept one of the pillows for myself and I've been sleeping with it. It's hard to imagine Canvas being so soft.

I can't get Trouble (aka Trubby) out of the bed I made him. He loves it. I think this dog bed has given me the most pleasure. I worked hard to create a bed just for Trubby and how he sleeps. Two bolsters around the circle give him some support on his achy joints and a place to rest his head.

I've been a bad blogger. Bad, Bad Blogger. I will try to be better at blogging. Be Better at Blogging.

I've added a really pretty burrow bed to my collection. Very elegant with a burgundy floral print and a denim ticking on the inside. I'm very proud of this bed. I wish I had something half as comfy to curl up in.

I'm pleased with the response. I've only listed the item this morning and 55 people have looked and one person inquired.

We purchased a Wii at the Berry house this week. I do believe it has made me more productive. I find myself sewing until I'm blind and then stopping to play tennis or baseball. Really lessens the tension.

I have a show coming up at Valley Forge High School in Northeastern Ohio this Saturday. So, the week has been spent sewing and sewing and sewing. I'm looking forward to seeing customers Face to Face. This online thing gets a little lonely after a while.

Well, the sea was rough that day my friend. Like an old man returning a cup of soup. fact

The sea has been a bit rough this last week. Our household has come down with the flu. I wouldn't be surprised if the dogs and cat were struck next. Everyone is coughing, sniffing, wiping, hacking, and complaining.

So, here I am blogging on a Saturday night.

I am vexed by the strange fact that, while others lose their appetites when sick, I seem to become ravenous. I think of brownies, cocoa, pasta, cookies, cake, ho-ho's. Sad, so sad.
